Making the best mistake
As long as I can remember writing and creating, I’ve also blundered my way into doors which would never have opened if people had taken me seriously. So mistakes became one of my prime magic moves. But they weren’t something I could carefully control, or organise.
To make a great mistake, you have to be in the right frame of mind. I was once in a business meeting where I was hired in as a creative. The meeting wasn’t going well. The team I was on was somehow not getting the deal they wanted. Things were sticky and someone turned to me and asked me what I thought. I was really only thinking that I didn’t belong in this hot glass office and how nice it would be to leave. To give myself time to think of what they might want to hear that I was thinking, I went to pick up my teaspoon and stir my coffee. But instead I picked up my pencil and stirred my coffee. Somehow the ice was broken and the room burst into laughter and the deal got done.
The print above was me, really trying to write the sentence perfectly and spelled right (for once). But when I saw it was all wobbly and I started to spell it wrong I thought f…ck it, I’ll just carry on and then I can have lunch. job done. It’s been my best seller ever since.
But trying to make a mistake is a different thing all together.
Here’s to many many mistakes we all have waiting for us in the near future. May they bless us with their magical moments. Have a lovely summer everyone.
